National Test Scheduled for 7 September 2025
Why Is the Test Happening?
Emergency Alerts are designed to keep the public safe by warning of life-threatening events such as:
-
Severe flooding
-
Fires
-
Public health emergencies
Regular testing helps ensure the system works properly if it is ever needed in a real emergency.
The government has made information about the test available in British Sign Language (BSL) and Easy Read formats, ensuring accessibility for all.
What to Expect
On the day of the test, your phone or tablet will:
-
Emit a loud, siren-like sound
-
Display a clear message on screen
-
Vibrate for around 10 seconds
This alert will look and sound different from other notifications, so it will be immediately recognisable. If you have a vision or hearing impairment, the combination of audio and vibration signals is designed to ensure the alert is noticed.
Do You Need to Do Anything?
No action is required. The test is not a real emergency, and the message will disappear once the alert finishes.
Can You Opt Out?
It is possible to opt out of receiving Emergency Alerts, including this test. However, the government advises keeping them switched on, as they could provide crucial information that helps keep you safe in a genuine emergency.
