Local School Transformed by Major Community Volunteering Project

A primary school in Groby has been given a new lease of life after a major volunteering effort led by BD Living, part of Barratt Redrow PLC.

Elizabeth Woodville Primary School has benefited from a large-scale refurbishment project, bringing modern, bright learning spaces to pupils and staff, thanks to the efforts of nearly 30 volunteers.

The partnership began in 2025 when BD Living donated £500 to the school. During that visit, Headmaster Mr Pridmore spoke openly about the financial challenges facing the school, with budgets largely tied up in essential building maintenance. This often leaves little room for wider improvements, meaning important upgrades are delayed.

Recognising an opportunity to make a real impact in the local community, BD Living selected the school as a volunteering project. The initiative also aimed to bring staff together, allowing them to use their skills while strengthening teamwork across the business.

Following discussions with the school, three priority areas were identified for refurbishment due to their worn and outdated condition. Detailed plans were drawn up and approved, with work scheduled in phases.

The first phase, focusing on internal improvements, was completed during the February half term while the school was closed. A second phase, which will include the creation of a sensory garden, is planned for the summer.

To maximise efficiency and reduce waste, BD Living repurposed materials that were no longer suitable for customer use. These items were prepared and assembled throughout January ahead of installation.

The project also saw collaboration with DWH East Mids and several specialist trades. Electricians and plumbers supported key elements of the work, ensuring a high-quality finish throughout.

During a final inspection, an additional issue was identified with the school’s front door, which raised security concerns. In response, Ford Windows stepped in and generously supplied and installed a brand-new secure door at no cost.

Despite the tight schedule, volunteers completed all internal works within just five days, ensuring everything was ready before pupils returned.

The transformation has been warmly welcomed by the school community. Headmaster Mr Pridmore said the results have had a lasting impact, creating inspiring spaces that will benefit children for years to come. He praised the collaboration and generosity of everyone involved, highlighting the improvements to wraparound care facilities and new resource areas designed to support personalised learning.

BD Living has expressed pride in the project, describing it as a meaningful way to give back to the community while making a tangible difference.

The company also extended thanks to its trade partners, including AKG Electrical Contractors Midlands Ltd, Hardings of Whitlock, Ford Windows and Biffa, as well as the volunteers whose time and effort made the transformation possible.
