Leicestershire dad takes on eight walking challenges to support families living with allergies

A father from Leicestershire is taking on eight long distance walking challenges to raise vital funds for Allergy UK after his daughter was diagnosed with multiple severe allergies.

Kalpesh Tanna, 43, a Product Group Manager, was inspired to take on the gruelling series of walks because his eight year old daughter, Shyla, lives with multiple severe allergies and is at risk of anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life threatening allergic reaction.

Kalpesh has already completed three of the challenges and is continuing his fundraising journey with a 25 kilometre walk in Surrey in August. He will then take part in the Summer Walk in London later that month, followed by the Thames Bridges Trek in September and the Chiltern Challenge, each covering 25 kilometres.

Shyla began experiencing frequent bouts of illness nearly three years ago. Tests later revealed she was allergic to 17 different allergens, including all nuts, tree and grass pollen, mould and pet dander. She also lives with allergic eczema.

The family says they have faced difficulties finding support and reliable information while coping with the daily physical and emotional impact of severe allergies.

Kalpesh said: "Living with allergies affects everyday life in ways that many people don't always see and it can be a constant worry for both children and their families. This is my way of giving back, raising awareness and helping other families who are facing similar challenges.

"Every mile I complete is for Shyla and for everyone living with allergies. The support we've received so far has been incredible, and I'm looking forward to completing the remaining events and continuing to make a difference."

Simone Miles, Chief Executive of Allergy UK, praised Kalpesh's fundraising efforts.

She said: "Our work wouldn't be possible without the determination and generosity of our incredible fundraisers. It's inspiring to hear about Kalpesh's efforts on our behalf.

"We're very grateful to Kalpesh for his commitment. The money raised will help fund services which address the unmet need felt by so many in the allergy community looking for clinical advice, psychological support and information about their rights."
