A Leicestershire family are set to climb Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, this month in memory of their cousin, who died suddenly last year, while raising money for a leading veterans’ charity.
Russell Gallacher, originally from Leicestershire, joined the 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards in 1994 at just 17 years old. Over a distinguished 30 year military career, he became known for his leadership, humility and dedication to helping others. He rose to the rank of Major in 2015 and later served with The Royal Yeomanry, where he played a key role in training and mentoring younger recruits.
He died suddenly whilst at work in August 2025, aged just 48.

Inspired to honour his memory, Darcey Connor, 14, and her brother Harry, 11, told their parents they wanted to take on a meaningful challenge. Now, the family, along with Russell’s younger brother Luke, will attempt a 20km trek to the 1,085 metre summit of Yr Wyddfa on Friday 10 April. They will be joined by their cocker spaniel, Benji.
Darcey said: “I’m excited and nervous for the challenge, but it’s a great cause so I will do my best.”
Harry added: “I really hope I can get to the top and not be out of puff, this will be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”
Alongside the challenge, the family are raising money for Help for Heroes, which supports members of the Armed Forces community. Darcey and Harry have already organised a cake sale and gathered support from friends and family.
Their father, Dan, said the response so far has been overwhelming.
“Darcey and Harry really sparked the idea for something we could all prepare for. None of us have done anything like this before but we’re up for the challenge and proud to be supporting Help for Heroes.
“Russ was someone who always looked out for others. It feels like a fitting way to recognise his service and the impact he had on so many people.”
Help for Heroes supports veterans and their families with physical and mental health, as well as wider welfare needs, helping them adjust to life after service.
